Living the dream in English football

After qualifying in 2013 and working in Melbourne for a few years, Kelvin decided to pack his bags in 2018 and move to London. During that time, working in professional football and alongside a network of various medical experts played a huge part in how Sterling Physiotherapy eventually came to be.

“When I was in that well-resourced professional sports setting, athletes naturally get to have access to the best possible health services. Players know that their medical information is communicated well, every step of the way. And that is what some of us try to bring into our private practices and the general population environment as well. I just don't see why everyday people with their injuries should ever feel like there is not enough communication between their medical professionals.”

Sterling Physiotherapy on a mission to celebrate health

Kelvin’s main goal is to provide better care for the general public, and encourage better communication between medical and allied health professionals who may share a patient.

“We put a lot of energy to network with other healthcare professionals. We try to get to know the surgeons, the fitness coaches, our allied health colleagues, and people at various stages of the patient’s recovery. It’s our way of showing that we care, and to make the patient feel supported as much as possible.”

“I'm not going to pretend like I'm the first one to think of this, because every day I see some of my colleagues doing the great work out there. I believe that Physiotherapy in Australia is heading in the right direction; and I just wanted to do find a way to do my bit, contribute to a culture of communicating, so that patients receive better care.”

Kelvin had used Physitrack before starting his practice and there are reasons why he’s been a user since 2018.

“For me, it was the interface as a whole. Physitrack’s interface is very tap-friendly and optimized for mobile. It’s easy to add in modifications and customize the exercise prescriptions.” Kelvin adds something with a smile on his face: “I also like the adherence tracker, I use it as a bit of accountability or scare tactic for the patient: if they don't do their exercises, I will turn that on and I will need my patients to tap to show me they have done them. They have a good laugh about it.”

Overcoming challenges and tips to other practitioners

While building his company Kelvin was based in Europe and had to arrange and attend a lot of Zoom meetings with people in Australia. This meant working through gruelling time zones and sometimes missing on sleep altogether. “Fatigue was my biggest challenge”. “No one can perform at their best when there isn’t enough sleep, and now I’m trying to prioritize that.”

What kind of tips would you give out to your colleagues, knowing what you know now?

“I’m definitely not giving any advice as a business owner because I am still learning so much about it myself, but I can share what has helped me as a practitioner.”

“Ironically enough, I would say get more sleep,” Kelvin says with a laugh.

“You can’t care for others effectively when you’re flat. What I also found helpful for my own mental health is to finish my paperwork or notes before I physically leave the clinic, so it doesn’t linger in the back of my mind when I get home for the evening.”

Kelvin continues celebrating health and building his business with excitement and hunger to help his patients in Australia, and he hopes his story inspires others to follow their dreams as well.
